How the fastest shiny hunt is worked out
Base shiny odds are 1 in 4,096 from Gen 6 onward and 1 in 8,192 in Gen 2–5 games. The Shiny Charm adds extra rolls on every encounter, and some games multiply your chances far beyond that: SOS chains in Sun & Moon, Max Raid dens and Dynamax Adventures in Sword & Shield, Poké Radar chains, chain fishing, Sparkling Power sandwiches in Scarlet & Violet and the Shiny Donut in Legends: Z-A.
For every Pokémon we compare each documented encounter — species, game, location, method, encounter rate and levels — then convert it into an expected hunt time using that method's shiny odds and seconds per encounter. The ranking always shows the fastest route to a shiny first, with the best hunt highlighted above the runners-up.
Shiny hunting FAQ
- What are the shiny odds in each game?
- 1 in 4,096 in Gen 6–9 and 1 in 8,192 in Gen 2–5. The Shiny Charm brings those to roughly 1 in 1,365 and 1 in 2,731, and stacking boosts like SOS chains, Poké Radar or Sparkling Power sandwiches pushes them much lower. Every hunt page shows the exact odds for the method you pick.
- Which games does this cover?
- Every mainline game from Gen 1 to Gen 9, including remakes and DLC — from Red, Blue and Yellow through Scarlet, Violet and Legends: Z-A. Where a game never published real spawn percentages (Gen 9 areas), rates are estimated from which species appear in each area, and the page says so.
- How is the fastest hunt decided?
- Each encounter is scored by expected time to a shiny: the chance of the species appearing, its shiny odds with your selected charm and boosts, and how long one encounter takes for that method. The lowest expected time wins.
